Mickleover Flower Group is celebrating the 50th anniversary since they joined the National Association Flower Arrangement Societies in June 1961. The festivities got off to a fantastic start last Wednesday with a fabulous floral demonstration by national demonstrator Tony Brown.

The friendly social group of men and women meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at St John's Church Hall, Devonshire Drive, Mickleover.
At the meetings they are entertained by a professional demonstrator who creates a variety of designs using plants and foliage with a witty commentary and humorous stories. The influence of European designers with their artistic and minimal ideas has inspired the group with new and interesting ideas.
The group also have at least two very popular practice evenings a year so people caan have some 'hands on' experience.
I was amazed to hear that all of the beautiful demonstration displays, including the vases, baskets and other accessories are raffled off at the end of the evening for the princely sum of £1 a strip! Last Wednesday ten very lucky people got an amazing professional (and expensive!) display to take home.
The group are often asked to help with church festivals, weddings and well dressings to name but a few. Their members have been very successful at local and national show competitions and last year donated £1,200 to the Air Ambulance Charity.
Visitors are very welcome to both the demonstrations and practice evenings – you do not need to have any experience just a pair of scissors! Having attended the last meeting I would thoughly recommend it to anyone who is interested in flowers. The club can be contacted on 01332 516175.
